Pre-Requisites for an Adventure Sailing Vacation

Posted by myadmin on 27th June 2009

What To Bring For Adventure Sailing Vacation

When you book an adventure sailing vacation package, you don’t have to worry about food when this is usually part of the package. This means you only have to bring your own personal stuff with you on board so for those who have never done this before, here is what you should bring for adventure sailing.

Given that you will be at sea quite awhile, you should pack a lot of casual gear which simply means lightweight clothing with long sleeves so you avoid getting sunburn during the day. It will also be a good idea to have a wide brimmed hat and a pair of sunglasses to protect your face.

If you want to lounge around on deck, you better have a beach towel with you as well as sun block. Since the weather could get cold at night, you should also have a light jacket.

Charters usually make port stops before heading home so don’t forget to bring along a light pair of shoes or sandals so you can do so some sightseeing in the island. It will be good to have some insect repellant with you so don’t get bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.

If you are under medication, don’t forget to bring it with you. Given that you will be a way for some time, make sure you have your toiletries so you can shave and brush your teeth.

The most important thing to bring with you when you go adventure sailing is a camera. This will allow you to take pictures so you can share this with family and friends when you get home.

For those who want to go swimming, don’t forget your bathing suit so you can jump in anytime into the water especially when you just want to cool off. If there is some space in your bag, perhaps you can also pack in some snorkeling gear as some will rent this to you for a fee.

All of this should be placed in a 10 kilogram bag which is preferably collapsible because of the limited storage space on board most ships. This will also allow other passengers to stow their gear.

You don’t have to bring your cellular phone with you because in the event that something should happen on board, they have a satellite phone and a radio so rescue can be called in. You also don’t need to bring a first aid kit since this is also available on the ship.

If you are bored relaxing on board the chartered ship, you can volunteer and help the crew with sailing like hauling the main sail in the morning, trimming the sails or steering a course during the day. With that, you won’t feel guilty having done nothing when you decided to go on a vacation.

Another way to help out is to catch some fish which the crew can serve as lunch or dinner even if the ship has already been stocked with food for the entire trip. You can bring your own rod or check if they have some on board that you can borrow.

Now that you know what to bring for adventure sailing vacation, the only thing you have to do now is book the trip. You can do this through your travel agent or online.

Check some cool sailing and surf accesories.

Why do my feet hurt when I run ?

Posted by myadmin on 24th June 2009

If you are a seasoned runner you know the importance of a good running shoe. It can make the difference between a great running experience, or potential injury.

The problem is not being informed. Most people do not know that there is a proper shoe for your foot type. Knowing your foot type before you hit the stores can make a world of difference whether you want to do brisk walking, jogging or marathons.

How do you determine your foot type? It’s really quite simple. Get a piece of dark paper and then soak your feet and step on the paper. Look closely at the imprint. There are generally three types of feet.

1) If your imprint covers most of the feet (not much arch at all) then you have flat feet. You are among the 60% of the population in America with flat feet.

2) If you show a wide arch and narrow line of your outer foot then you have high arches. You are among the 30% of the population of in America.

3) If your imprint has a medium arch then congratulations. You are among the 10% of the population in America with the ideal foot.

Regardless of what foot type you have, there are running shoes that are right for you. As many as 56% of the 30 million runners in America, have injuries from improper shoe selection. So you can see that you do have to do your homework to protect yourself.

With all the pressure one gets from TV adds or what is popular to wear now, you really need to put the health aspect first. Most likely you will be able to find a shoe that is right for your foot type and still have style.

To determine the shoe to buy, here are some guidelines:

1) For the flat-footed person, you will want to buy a shoe that is rigid and stable. This will prevent your ankles from bending inward or outward and it will protect you.

2) If you have high arches, you will want to look for a very cushioned shoe. High arched feet don’t absorb shock very well so you’ll want that cushion to help in absorbing the shock for you.

3) For the medium arch or ideal foot, you want the combination of both stability and cushioning for your feet.

When you try on a shoe it should be snug but not tight and there should be approximately a 1/2-inch between your longest toe and the front of your running shoe. Tip: Shop for your shoes late afternoon when your feet are a little more spread. If it is not comfortable when you are in the store, imagine what it will be like when you are out on a run. So test them well while you’re there.

In summary, those shoes you bought that were such a bargain may be cause for concern in the future, so pick wisely and may your running experience be smooth and wonderful. Your feet will be most grateful.

Advantages of Running Indoors

Posted by myadmin on 24th June 2009

Treadmills have many advantages over real running and walking. Sure, you don’t get to go outdoors in the nature, but you can also avoid bad weather and all the other hazards that come with going out of your house, such as cars and passers-by. It’s much more relaxing to not have to keep your mind and one eye on the potential problems, and just concentrate on your running.

Apart from that, though, there are many more serious benefits. The ground remains at the same level for the whole run, which avoids you having to constantly adjust the way you’re running – you can build up a pace and then keep going. Also, the run is always at the speed you’re most comfortable with, and you can change it whenever you like. If you do want to run uphill, though, you can simulate that too, by adjusting the gradient of the machine.

Another advantage is in all the statistics you can collect about your running: because the machine is setting the pace of the run, it can calculate all sorts of things automatically, such as the amount of energy (calories) you have burned. You can also hook yourself to various monitors – heart rate monitors, breathing monitors, and so on – to check all the different aspects of your health when you run.

One of the best things about running indoors is that you don’t have to be bored while you’re doing it – you can watch TV or read a book while you’re using it. Even though it can be quite relaxing, though, treadmills are still a more effective form of exercise than some complex cardiovascular exercises. Faced with a choice between getting into all sorts of strange positions and contorting my body into odd shapes or just running on a treadmill, I know which one I’d choose.
